Pinocchio / August Wayne Booth

August (Latin): Majestic
Wayne (English): Wagon builder
Booth (English): Small house or dwelling

All these relate to the way story was told. How he was supposed to do the greater/majestic deed of making Emma believe, build a way for her to remember. Also his last name relates to how he has come back home in the end, to his father.

The writers have also revealed some information: “August Wayne Booth, we named him after the guy who coined the term “unreliable narrater”. The term was coined in 1961 by Wayne C. Booth. SO there you go. Names are even important for Real worlders.”

Mad Hatter / Jefferson

Jefferson (German): Peaceful place. A possible reference of his struggles to find that one place with his daughter again, a peaceful one for him.

It is also a reference to the band Jefferson Airplane. They had a hit song called ‘White Rabbit’ based on the story of Alice in Wonderland

Huntsman / Graham Humbert

Graham (English): gray dwelling/homestead. A reference to how his life in Storybrooke is unnatural or without any meaning
Humbert: The Huntsman last name in the original Disney story

Peter

(Greek): Stone. Could be a reference to the fact that he was related to a blacksmith who are usually said to be “hard as stone”

Also possible that he was so named after the story of Peter and the Wolf

Once Upon A Time Name Meanings & Trivia [2/8] ↔ Regina Mills

Regina (Latin): Queen
Mills: - Possible connection to the Latin prefix Mal- meaning Evil. Which literally translates to ’Evil Queen’
          - Possible connection to the fact that Regina’s mother might have been the miller’s daughter mentioned in Brothers Grimm’s story: Rumpelstiltskin.
          - Could also be connected to ‘A Tale of Two Cities’. The job of the mill is to grind wheat for people, but in the story, it is taken as a reference to ‘grinding people’ and symbolises destruction.

Trivia:

  • In a weird way, Regina is Henry’s great-grandmother (by marriage)
